She was raised and born in Vermont. Anya began performing as a child as a part of a community theater and went on to explore the arts into her teens. Her father is an Argentine of Scottish and English descendance. Her mother hails from Spanish as well as English heritage. Taylor-Joy is the youngest of five children from her father's previous marriage. The family she grew up with was living in Buenos Aires from the time she was 6 until they moved in Victoria, London. Taylor-Joy says the move in London was stressful and that she didn't learn English so that she could avoid returning to Argentina. The school she attended had to be changed in Northlands and then Hill House. Later, she enrolled in Queen's Gate School to study ballet and to perform in school's productions.
