O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she was voted into the final 100th stage. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat in top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for lowest 3 and the the bottom 2. It was a shock to the judges and they recommended that people vote for Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the best ability to sing. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil had defeated Goudie and became the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in history of the show. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
